Step by step towards
a greener coffee house
We do not pretend to have arrived. Below is what actually happens in the Dutch locations, what Coffee Fellows does as a brand, and where we cannot say anything yet.
What you notice here
This differs per location, so we name them.
Your coffee without a disposable cup
Staying a while? Your coffee comes in real crockery. Taking it with you? At 3 locations you can have it in a deposit cup instead of cardboard: Apeldoorn, The Hague (Fruitweg) and Soest. Bringing your own cup is welcome anywhere, always.
Saving food at the end of the day
Whatever is left at the end of the day, we would rather not throw away. Through Too Good To Go, bagels, sandwiches, muesli and pastries leave in a surprise bag at Apeldoorn, The Hague (Fruitweg) and Soest.
Eating consciously need not be a punishment
Wholemeal bread, muesli and bowls full of vitamins to start the day with — and a mini muffin alongside your coffee if you fancy one. There is plenty to choose without meat too, from bagels with hummus to bowls with fresh fruit.
What Coffee Fellows
does internationally
Coffee Fellows has been working on a sustainability programme since 2020. Part of it takes place outside the Netherlands — so we write it down as it is.
Coffee Fellows Certified
Our coffee beans are bought to certified standards, with a chain you can follow from farmer to roastery. That certification stands for both the quality and the origin of the beans.
A forest in Malawi
At the end of 2020 Coffee Fellows planted the first thirteen hectares with native saplings, aiming to offset the 2019 emissions within twenty years. Between 2021 and 2023 the project was extended; the ambition is to add ten to thirteen hectares every year. Long-term lease contracts and working with people from the region mean it delivers something locally too.
Offsetting comes after saving: it is about emissions that cannot be avoided.
Green electricity
About 95% of the German company-owned locations run on TÜV Süd-certified electricity from European hydropower. For the Dutch locations we do not have those figures — see below.
What we do not
yet talk about
There are three things we deliberately say nothing about, because we do not have the figures for the Netherlands: our energy use, how much waste we actually separate and where everything other than the coffee comes from — think dairy, bread and packaging.
As soon as we do have those figures, they will appear here. Even if they disappoint. A sustainability page without numbers is more honest than one with invented numbers.
